FADE IN
SMALL TOWN (Scene 1)
There is a small snowy town located at the bottom of a valley. Snow falls gently over the shops that are cluttered along a single road. The sound of bells ring throughout the valley.
Slowly, the camera pans into a red, rusted pickup truck. A barely mid-twenty-year-old man sits with his eyes closed, presumably passed out.
Suddenly, the man is gasping for air. Pushing the car door open, he falls onto the ground and scrambles up off the snow-covered ground. The camera follows slowly.
As the man tries to understand where he is, the camera pans over the small town once again to show an endless span of snow-covered mountain tops.
The man is confused and in a dazed state, but he begins his journey down the lightly snow dusted concrete road.
The camera moves up towards the sky and introduces the title card.
THE TOWN (Scene 2)
As NATHANIEL (The Man) enters the town, a woman with red hair greets him. She is decorated head to toe in Christmas attire and looks as though she was having the time of her life.
WOMAN
Nathaniel! It is so great to finally see you up and about. You would not believe the Petersons and their children. They have been going haywire in my store for far too long!
Without another word, Nathaniel is dragged to a Christmas decorated store. The sign was a dull bronze that had letters carved out of it. It spells out, “Lily’s Hometown Store.”
Normally, Nathaniel would be used to people asking him for help in his hometown, however, he did not know this woman. In fact, he didn’t even know where he was. The red truck was his as the license plate confirmed that, but this town was not where he was from. It looks more like a movie set. Too perfect and unused yet there were people walking around and using the stores as though they were ordinary. To confused to argue, Nathaniel allows himself to be pulled into the store.
Upon entering, Nathaniel is greeted to the screams of three children and their negligent parents. The two parents, the Petersons, are looking at the aisle of food, ignoring their protesting children. However, the Petersons aren’t the only people who are occupying the store.
In the far corner, there is a girl with blonde hair. She seems extremely ordinary, normal, and not in the slightest bit unique.
The girl was so ordinary that Nathaniel didn’t even see her as he walked in, so the woman seems to force his head towards her direction.
WOMAN
Wow! Look at that! It is the new girl in town! I think her name was Samantha. I heard she came from the city and is incredibly kind. She is starting a small flower shop down the street and is selling me all the stuff in season to decorate my store with. Isn’t she just fantastic?
Nathaniel shows no interest. She looks like a generic Hollywood star that could be confused for five other stars. He was more interested in why the woman, he presumed Lily, was so focused on the girl when the problem was with the Petersons.
NATHANIEL
Do you still need my help with the Petersons?
Lily looks confused.
LILY
Who? Why I heard the Petersons are at home taking good care of the children. They were apparently building a snowman. Isn’t that wonderful?
Nathaniel turns back to the area the Petersons originally inhabited. His expression falls as it is revealed that the mess that once existed in the food aisle was gone. The Petersons didn’t even appear to have been there in the first place. Nathaniel goes to speak up before he is cut off by Lily.
LILY
You should go talk to her. She must be so nervous being in a new town. Poor girl, I heard she had also recently lost her mother. Oh! You just have to talk to Hannah! I promise you she is so nice!
Snapping his head towards Lily, Nathaniel blinks in confusion.
NATHANIEL
I thought her name was Samantha.
LILY
No, I said Hannah.
Lily stares at Nathaniel a little too long for his comfort, but in hopes of appealing her, Nathaniel makes his way over to “Hannah.”
NATHANIEL
(Uncomfortably) Hello, there. My name is Nathaniel. I guess I live here. What is your name?
He wants this whole conversation to end as quickly as he can so he can figure out where he is. His body language shows how impatient he is as he begins to slightly bounce on his toes.
NEW GIRL
Oh, hello. My name is Caroline. It is a pleasure to meet you.
Nathaniel could not care about the different names anymore. He quickly shakes her hand, and he excuses himself. Before he can leave, Lily stops him one last time.
LILY
Isn’t she so sweet? You two already seem like a pair of lovebirds!
Nathaniel ignores her, and he moves past an unblinking Lily. When he opens the door, Nathaniel pushes another person but doesn’t spare them a second glance because the background characters arm simply phases through Nathaniel’s shoulder.
THE REALITY (Scene 18)
NATHANIEL
What the hell?
Shaking, he watches the once picture-perfect town slowly shift into a flat grey foam pads that protrude out of the wall. Turning around, he watches the new girl, Lily, the Petersons, and the other townsfolk gather round his red truck.
One by one, they each have a layer of pixels that slowly fade off their scarily perfect skin. Underneath those pixels reveal that the once strange humans were in fact androids.
NATHANIEL
No, seriously? What the hell?
The androids look toward one another before the one who was once the mayor steps forward.
MAYOR
Nathaniel… Forgive us for tricking you like this, but this situation wasn’t something we wanted to throw you into without a bit of a cushion.
NATHANIEL
(Heavily confused) What on earth could be so hard to tell me that you would put me through a poor rip off of a Hallmark movie! Why the hell would you even put me in a fake Hallmark movie. No one could even remember the main chick’s name!
One of the other androids brings forward a TV-like screen and displays the reality of the world. On the screen is a barren wasteland that looked as though it had been repeatedly destroyed from a warfare.
The mayor explains.
MAYOR
Years ago, you signed up to get a brain scan to help with a concussion you had received while at work. Your brain scan was saved and kept in a file like the rest of us. So, while you lived out the rest of your life, your brain scan lived on in a computer.
Nathaniel lifts his once human hands up to reveal that they are now nothing but mechanical parts that are shiny and metallic.
MAYOR
You are one of the only things from the 2000’s that survived from the war. The rest of us are survivors of the war that moved our brains to android bodies.
NATHANIEL
What does that have to do with anything that just happened? Why the whole movie get-up?
MAYOR
(Smiling) Well, you weren’t the only thing that survived the war. On the flash drive there was your brain scan and finally the last thing humanity has left us. Hallmark Movies!
The camera zooms up to Nathaniel’s face as he lets out an ear-piercing scream.
THE CAMERA CUTS OFF QUICKLY TO BLACK
