SUBMISSIONS ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED: Please keep an eye on our Instagram, @riverwhalereview, for our fall call for submissions!

HOW TO SUBMIT:
We are currently only accepting work by undergraduate students at Minnesota State University, Mankato. If this sounds like you, congratulations! We look forward to seeing your imagination in our inbox. Please swim through the rules below before letting your work set sail.

GENERAL FLOATSAM AND JETSAM:
Email all submissions to riverwhalereview@gmail.com

Please attach your written submission as a Word document (.DOC or .DOCX). Written works uploaded as JPEG’s, PNG’s, PDF’s and submissions via USPS will not be considered. Word files allow our sailors to properly upload your work onto our website if accepted.

Include a short third-person bio of your name, year, major, and any other relevant information in the body of the email, as well as your full name or desired pen name.

Sample bio: Mobius Richard is a third-year creative whaling student at MNSU. He primarily works in pirate poetry and underwater basket weaving.

We welcome simultaneous submissions, but if your piece is accepted elsewhere before we can float it, please reply to your original submission email thread and let us know.

If we accept your piece for publication, our editorial team may approach you with suggested edits. While most of these may be line edits, we may occasionally ask about a larger change to your piece (though we don’t anticipate this happening often, and you are not obligated to say yes).

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

FICTION
Up to 3,500 words of prose in any genre (we love all species of marine mammals here: literary, horror, YA, mystery, fantasy, fabulist, and especially stuff that doesn’t care about frivolous marketing labels. “Species” are artificial boundaries imposed by humans on nature, after all) attached as a Word document (.DOC or .DOCX).

CREATIVE NONFICTION
Up to 3,500 words of nonfiction prose attached as a Word document (.DOC or .DOCX).

POETRY
Submit 3-5 poems in a Word document (.DOC or .DOCX). Please separate individual poems with defined page breaks.

ART
Up to 3 pieces of visual art, with individual or collection titles when relevant– please specific if untitled.
Submit high-resolution PNG or JPEG images as an email attachment.

MIRACLES
Up to 1 audio/video composition, or other assorted motion graphics
Submit audio as MP3 or MP4 file. For video compositions, please send a host site URL. (We recommend YouTube or Vimeo)

CONTENT WARNING
We will not publish work that promotes misogynistic, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise oppressive or exploitative ideals.
