Despair Is My Favorite Emotion

Imagine it

INT. KING’S CASINO – NIGHT

YOU’re sitting at a packed poker table
Your hand: An ace of spades, an ace of hearts,
A ten of spades, a two of clubs, and a jack of diamonds.
YOU’ve already used your discard, your best hand is a pair
But YOU can’t fold, YOU’ll have lost everything if YOU do
But YOU can’t win either, there’s no chance the others
All have hands worse than yours.
So YOU sit there
Knowing how the future will play out yet unable to move
Hands shaking, mind becoming a gyre, regret choking YOU
And there!

INT. YOU – DAY AND NIGHT

An ink-like void that rains into itself
YOU stand in the middle and forget what
The sun looked like, was it bright?
A tendril from the abyss hangs over YOU
DAMOCLES twisted in the obsidian exterior.
What do YOU do?

EXT. MCDONALDS – DAY

I sit on my car and watch the cars go by on the interstate
An ok double cheeseburger in hand
And my friends off to the rest of their lives.
The stem of my heart is cold
It begins to rot, a sludge emerge from the tears
Until an ink-like tendril is grafted in its place.
What do I do?
I grab it!

INT. YOU – DAY AND NIGHT

YOU pull it down and devour the light trapped within
The cold u-turns into a volcanic eruption
The rain falls into a clear sky.
YOU now control the flow of fate
The future is within your grasp

INT. KING’S CASINO – NIGHT

Your guillotine pair unshackles from your wrists
YOU reveal your hand
And YOU lose
And YOU go home with the phantom-money flying behind YOU.
Yet YOU see your apartment at the end of the road
YOU still see your figures and family photos
And YOU still sleep in a familiar warmth
Tomorrow within sight.

EXT. MCDONALDS – DAY

That’s why despair is my favorite emotion.
I can see my friend’s plane from here.
